So many people email or message us asking for help on their fitness journey. When we ask them what they are doing now as far as exercise and nutrition we either get no response or a list of reasons why they can’t be consistent with their routines. My response is also stop thinking why you can’t do something and think why you can do it. As soon as you take the word “can’t” out of the equation, a whole world opens up for you and you begin moving forward towards health and fitness.
This blog began about a year ago when I decided I wanted to compete in a triathlon and before the triathlon I decided to complete my first half marathon. These goals had never crossed my mind but once I put my mind to it and started telling friends and family that I was going to do a half marathon and triathlon, everything started falling into place. I had a workout routine with friends that included running, biking, and later after the weather warmed up a bit, swimming. I completed both my first marathon and my first triathlon at 51 and these are now annual fitness events that I will be competing in each year – I enjoyed them that much!
The key to my success is that it never crossed my mind I would not be able to complete the triathlon or the half marathon. I am one of those folks that if you tell me I can’t do something I will set out to prove you wrong because at the end of the day, I will do whatever it is I set my mind to do. The mind is a very powerful tool for success in anything and any goals you may wish to accomplish and tick off your list.
Unfortunately, many people do not have the same mindset I do and I get that but it’s important that you work to overcome this challenge and believe in yourself. If you are one of these folks, it is important that you stop listening to all the naysayers in your life and focus on you starting with your mind. Tell yourself every single day that you are capable of doing whatever it is you want to do that day. If you are just beginning, it may be that you are telling yourself that you are strong enough to get rid of the junk food in your house or that you will just take a 10 minute walk. Doesn’t matter how fast you are going or how quickly you are clearing out your kitchen. The most important point is that you have TOLD yourself what you are going to do and you FOLLOW through and do it.
Starting today, do not tell yourself, or anyone else for that matter, that you can’t do something. You may not be able to do it perfectly the first time around, but you most certainly can take that first step and try to do it. If you want to run a 5K, today register for one and get outside and start by walking, then walking/jogging intervals then running the whole 3.1 miles. You may not be ready to run the race your first time out but you most certainly will be able to complete it. Tell yourself you CAN and you will.
