Getting Started Fitness Over 50

Wondering where to get started on your fitness over 50 journey?  The key is to just start.  Don’t put it off another day.  Think of it this way.  A little over a year ago, I was simply walking every morning with my dogs for 2 miles.  Then I found Zumba which I absolutely loved so I added that to my exercise routine.

Becky challenged the gym to compete in a mud run. The first time I had ever heard of a mud run.  I thought why not.  Boy did I not know what I was getting into!  The Gator Gauntlet is held twice a year in Gainesville, Florida.  It is a 5K with obstacles that ends in crawling through mud and jumping over fire.  So I started training to do this mud run. Was it hard? IT SURE WAS!  Would I do it again?  I did.  6 months after my first mud run, I completed my second.

I also went to support Becky at a triathlon at Eglin AFB which is located in Pensacola, Florida.  I loved it so much that I talked to Becky about it and I am not training for the next triathlon that will be held in June 2013.  In my wildest dreams I didn’t envision the 5K’s, mud runs, and training for a tri but I am loving every minute of it.

This year, my weight is down 25 pounds.  My blood pressure stays at 110/70.  Both my cholesterol and sugar readings are in the good range.  What would have happen if I hadn’t been walking then started on Zumba?  It would be a year later and I would most likely be 25 pounds heavier than what I am now.

The world is not going to end because you don’t get your butt off the couch and start moving but YOU are not doing what your body AND mind needs to live a healthy, happy life.  I truly think that life is a blast and I am glad I am healthy and enjoying it.  If I won the lottery tomorrow and wasn’t healthy – how long do you think I would be able to enjoy it?

My goal is to keep moving, moving, moving and I found that by challenging myself with continually beating my previous time on a 5K while training for my first triathlon, that my focus isn’t on the scale.  My focus is on my fitness and moving to the next level.  I want to help you the way that Becky has helped me so I hope you take away something every time you visit this site to read about my journey. It’s not always easy and I will write about that too – but it is always rewarding.

Get up and move today – even if it is just a walk around the yard or block.  Just get up and start moving.
