Will fitness as we know it survive Covid-19?

If you love roller coasters, you must be having a blast during the year we call 2020. For me, it’s been a year of adjustments, redirection, soul-searching and too much more to list especially when it comes to being a fitness instructor. Well a fitness instructor during a pandemic.

In Florida, gyms along with many other businesses were shut down in March but have since reopened. To say things are the way they were before the shut-down would be lying. Things are not the same and I don’t think things will ever be the same again to be honest.

When you make the choice to be a fitness instructor/wellness coach as I have, you do it because you love people. You want people to feel good. You want people to get up and get moving.

For me as an over 50 fitness instructor, the reasons are even more important. I have watched first hand as people I work with have eliminated one prescription medication after another as they learn to enjoy moving their bodies. While we may not feel so hot DURING exercise when we’re sweating, we know we all will feel like a million bucks when we’re done.

To keep people moving, I broadcast my classes live then record them for folks to participate in when it’s convenient for them. It’s not uncommon to have as many as 10 people online while I’m teaching Gentle Flow Yoga in person at the gym. If that’s what it takes to keep people moving, that’s what I’ll do.

But to say stress isn’t at an all time high would be a lie on my part. I don’t know from one day to the next if the gym I currently teach at will remain open. Not only do I teach fitness classes because I love it, it helps pay the bills as well. It’s not been easy trying to recover from the shut down but my husband and I keep moving forward.

I don’t know what will happen in the near future. Many folks believe we are headed for another shut-down while others feel we need to let this virus run it’s course. I’m not sure how you can let it run it’s course when as of this morning, the CDC is reporting 160,000+ deaths from Covid-19.

No matter what you believe, we all must do our parts and use common sense in our daily lives. Yes we know that exercise boosts the immune system but that doesn’t mean you need to be in a gym to exercise if you don’t feel comfortable. What is important is that you MOVE.

Head outside and take a walk, hike, or bike ride. Many outdoor activities allow you to keep the proper distance between yourself and those you may be exercising with. Prefer to take a fitness class?
