Words. What power they have to make or break your day, journey and even your spirit – IF you allow them too. One of the most important things you must do on your healthy and fitness journey is get your thoughts and tongue under control – especially if the journey includes weight loss.
All things that are new and that haven’t been done in the past are difficult in the beginning but does get easier as you continue to do it every single day. The same can be said for weight loss and the habits you must break and the new habits you must create. If, however, in your mind you doubt yourself or people close to you tell you over and over “you will never succeed” you may begin to believe them and doubt yourself and your abilities. All of us has it inside to push through but it is just so much easier to give up than it is to stick with something that might be hard in the beginning isn’t it?
So what should you do? First of all get control of your OWN thoughts. We believe more of what WE say than what others say about us. If you are trying to eat healthy and you constantly “tell” yourself that you can’t resist potato chips, eventually you are going to believe it. Not only will you end up eating those potato chips, you will toss all your other healthy eating habits right out the window and be back where you started.
Simply changing your thoughts can keep you on track. Instead of telling yourself that you do not have the willpower you need, tell yourself that you can make healthy food choices. If this sounds easier than it is, maybe how I change my thoughts will help you. When I’m thinking negative about ANYTHING, I stop and don’t proceed further until I get my own thoughts under control. I don’t do anything but focus on something positive.
For example, business can stress me out especially when we are in the beginning of the season for our wholesale business. Today I actually reached out to Coach Becky who simply said stop – there is nothing you can do about it. That was all it took. Normally, I can do this for myself but the issue I am dealing with was truly dragging me down and until she said those simple words to me, it felt like I was in quicksand sinking further and further.
Coach Becky’s words were enough to kick start my normal positive attitude but what do you do when the people around you are negative particularly when it comes to your fitness journey? This is easier said than done, but you must ignore their words and keep your own positive thoughts firmly in your head. You may have to let the toxic people go out of your life or limit the time you spend with them.
What if the negative words are coming from family? If you truly want to get healthy, you cannot let the negativity of others, including family, effect you. Easier said than done – I get it – but start by talking to your family. Explain to them what you are doing and why you are doing it. A healthier you equals a happier you and a happier you is a better you in all aspects including your family. Include them in your journey by telling them you need them to help you get healthy. Sometimes family can feel threatened by the changes they see in you. Reassure them that you are still you but that you want to be a healthier you not only for them but for yourself too.
Believe in yourself because YES YOU CAN!
