I think the question that I get asked the most is “How can I lose weight now that I’m over 40? over 50?” I too was asking that question and searching for answers. The answers I found had more to do with me than my age. I’ll admit it there are some things that are driving me crazy like my “love” handles. Who came up with the idea to call those love handles anyway? I don’t love them – I hate them! So what changed? My mindset changed. I realized that I was becoming obsessive with trying to reach certain numbers on the scale. When I stopped and really thought about how I felt, it became clear that I felt AMAZING and that being skinny doesn’t mean healthy.
Did you catch that? Just because you are skinny does not mean you are healthy. That statement can be very difficult for many folks especially women to grasp. We get so obsessed with those numbers on the scale that we forget that life is meant to be lived happily not under stress. Yes the number on the scale should be considered as part of the overall fitness picture but don’t allow it to consume your life. You need to understand that the number on the scale only tells part of your fitness story.
Starting today, work on your mindset and what you “believe” healthy is. You do not have an 18 year old body so don’t expect to weigh what you did at 18 nor will you wear the same clothes that fit your body at 18. Yes you might be able to squeeze into the same size, but chances are they won’t fit the way they did when you were a teenage. And that’s okay! Your body has changed during the journey that is your life.
Next try to enjoy the process instead of hating every minute of your day. When we are consumed by what we perceive to be the “perfect” body, we will never be happy with the progress we make along the way. Have fun. Find exercise you like to do and friends you enjoy being with. Every moment of life is meant to be enjoyed including health and fitness.
Try new things that you might not have been brave enough to try before. The first time I went zip lining, I’ll admit I was quite nervous until after the first ride. Once I survived that first ride there was no stopping me and I enjoyed flying over the tree tops and climbing up and down the platforms – and I got a great workout to boot! Also try new recipes with foods and spices you haven’t eaten before. This is how I found out that I absolutely LOVE kohlrabi and watermelon radishes!
Finally, recruit your family to participate in your adventures with you. What better way to enjoy quality family time than when you are all experiencing new things together? Remember, life is short. Enjoy every moment of every day – you deserve it.
