Best Way To Lose Weight Diet News, Fitness And Exercise At Any Age, My Journey To The Triathlon, Thoughts From Denise On The Fitness Journey Over 50

Want To Lose Weight? Set Goals.

Want to get fit and healthy?  Does this include losing weight?  You MUST be mentally committed as well as motivated to move forward not only in your fitness journey but in any lifestyle change you desire to make.  So what is the best way to get moving to lose weight?  It all starts with setting goals.

One of the best things I think I have ever done was to make the commitment to join Coach Becky in my first triathlon.  Our mutual friend, Sophia Smith, and I decided to to tag along with Coach Becky and her family for a weekend at Eglin Air Force Base where we watched her add another triathlon notch to her belt.  As we were watching the 3 events – swimming, biking and finishing with a run, I thought to myself, “I want to do that.”

After the event, we went to the beach to relax for the rest of the weekend and I mentioned to Becky that I wanted to participate with her in the next triathlon.  Right then, I committed to a major fitness goal.  Wasn’t on my bucket list and it was an event that I had never contemplated doing before.

The wheels were set in motion and there was no turning back.  Coach Becky is a force to be reckoned with when you share your fitness goals with her!  We started training by running and participating in every local 5K in Live Oak, FL and many in Lake City, FL and I also completed my first half marathon in Washington DC in April 2013 as part of my training.  We were biking 20 miles on the trail between our local small towns of O’Brien and Branford every Sunday.   And finally, we were swimming as often as we could.

Then before I knew it, the day for my first triathlon arrived in July 2013. I had wrenched my knee along the way but there was no way I was not going to participate in my first triathlon after training for a year.  My stomach did somersaults when I looked at that murky brown lake.  Before I think I was ready, the whistle sounded and I had to jump in the lake. It was auto-pilot after that as I focused on swimming and not on the alligators that may be lurking around.

Out of the water and into the transition area.  Jumped on my bike and off I went and before I knew it, I was back in the transition area putting my sneakers on to finish with the run.  I ended up alternating walking and running but I finished my first triathlon and am looking forward to the next one this year.

5K’s, half-marathons and triathlons were NEVER on my list of things I wanted to do. If you would have asked me 3 years ago if I thought I would do a triathlon, I would have told you “Heck no!”   Now I have two half marathons under my belt with a third on the horizon for March.  We have a group of folks that I enjoy participating with in every 5K that we have here in town and many in Lake City.  And I am training for my second triathlon in Lake Butler.  I did it and you CAN too!
