The Summertime Weight Gain Freak Out!

It may not have happened yet but  mark my words, it will happen. And it will happen in the near future.  What am I writing about? Weight gain and the “IT’S SUMMERTIME AND I HAVE TO PUT A SWIMSUIT ON” panic mode.  Okay breathe.  Repeat after me “It’s not too late to get ready for summer.”  Keep calm and read on.

When people freak out they tend to make not so wise decisions.  An example would be to starve yourself and only eat a few carrot sticks a day or exercising so much that you can’t get out of bed in the morning. Neither is healthy and won’t help you reach your goals.  What will? A plan of action! Let me help you.

Weight Loss Over 50

Quick fix methods can hurt you more than help you.  Bottom line is Nutrition + Exercise + Rest + Patience + Believe = Success.  These 5 things work together for a healthier, happier you.  Are you surprised?  Many people think there is some secret to losing weight and getting fit but the truth of the matter is consistency and commitment to the 5 things I wrote above is the way to go for permanent lifestyle changes.

First, eliminate the word diet from your vocabulary and focus on eating clean and healthy in the correct portion sizes.  Next add exercise into your day.  Coach Becky gave me a Fitbit and I LOVE IT! It’s like immediate feedback that you’re on track to reaching your goals. Now that I’m aware, I get up and walk around more throughout the day to make sure I reach my goal of 10,000 steps daily.

Equally important is rest.  If you are not getting enough sleep at night, take a few moments in the evening to unplug and unwind before heading to bed.  This means off the computer, notebook, Ipad, phone and TV.  Give yourself at least 30 minutes to unwind and decompress from the day.  By the way, this is one thing that I’m working on myself.  Can’t say it’s getting easier but it is becoming a habit for me.

Next is patience.  You didn’t gain weight or become inactive overnight.  Be patient with your journey as you change how you are eating and adding activity into your day.  It may be as simple as taking a morning walk as you gear up for the day or an evening walk to unwind in the evening.  It doesn’t matter what you do, just get moving.

Believe in yourself.  You were put on this earth an amazing person and you are still an amazing person. There are no mistakes. You have everything you need to be fit and healthy. Believe you can and you will. Trust the process. It works.
