Judy Koenig Browne’s Fitness Story

Here’s my Fit Over 50 story: I’m 54.

If there was a lemon law for bodies, I’d be eligible for a new one! Born with Hershprung’s Disease, a rare intestinal disorder, my childhood was filled with pain, hospital stays, and surgeries. I called it “elephantitis of the stomach” because the lack of nerves in the colon caused constant backup and shifting of the contents of my intestines. Needless to say, I did not have a very positive body image! Puberty was traumatic, and with very little emphasis on mental health back then, I received no therapy. Instead, I turned to alcohol and eating disorders, beginning a struggle that would last well into my 30’s.

Today, I am 54:
21 years sober, a happy wife, mom, teacher, writer, and fitness instructor/personal trainer. Since turning 50 I’ve taught Cage Fitness, done two Tough Mudders, a Spartan Race, and earned my Personal Trainer, POUND Fitness, and PILOXING certifications.

I try to honor those who’ve helped me by “paying it forward,” volunteering with pet rescue groups and creating a local prom scholarship foundation for needy, deserving students to have the prom of their dreams.

Recently my body has thrown me another curve. A bout with Lyme Disease has resulted in chronic all-over pain and neurological issues, and I am again facing a battle for my health. Still, I refuse to give up, during pain flare-ups focusing on gentler ways to stay fit: doing Pilates, yoga and aquacize for balance and flexibility, eating healthy, and using natural pain management techniques and products.

My goal is to show my children, students, and clients that “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” And when you’re done, plant the seeds for someone else to use.
