Do you have a fitness buddy that you walk or run with? How about a group of buddies that you work out with at the gym? There are so many benefits to having a fitness buddy or fitness family that if you do not have one, I really want to encourage you to find one. As you probably remember me writing about on our site, I have always been active and exercise has always been in my daily routine. It wasn’t until I was lucky enough to walk into Coach Becky’s gym a few years back that not only have I stayed on track with my exercise, I have moved on to being in the best shape I have been in many years, competing in events I never imagined completing and keeping the weight off is not an issue.
The main benefit of having a fitness buddy that you have made a commitment to meet, is you are less likely to find an excuse NOT to get your walk in or NOT to go to the gym. We are basically kind people and we do not like to let people down so we even when we do not want to, we will show up to meet our buddy. Other great reasons to have a fitness buddy are:
- Workout buddies challenge each other to be better than the day before. This could be as simple as walking faster or eating better. The key is when we are accountable to someone, we are more likely to stick to our schedule and improve.
- Exercising with someone makes the time pass quickly. I cannot count the number of times when Zumba is over after an hour, I say to my friends, “Are we done already?” The time just flies by because we are having so much fun being together.
- Fitness buddies can put a new perspective on boring routines. For example when you are walking, your partner might want to add a little jog from driveway to driveway. Just that little jog is enough to shake up your routine and move your fitness to the next level.
- An exercise buddy will notice your improvements and comment on it. Isn’t it a wonderful feeling when someone tells you look great? Your fitness buddy knows why you look great and will tell you more often and you’ll do the same for your buddy.
Are you ready to take your fitness to the next level? Visit your local gym and check it out. You may need to visit a few places to find the gym that’s right for you. Or maybe you prefer to be outdoors. Contact your local walking, running, biking, swimming, hiking or any other locally active club and go to the next event they have scheduled. Once you get out there, you will quickly find people you connect with and soon you will be making arrangements to meet your fitness buddy or buddies on a regular schedule. The key is you have to get up and get out there. Yes you CAN!
