One of the comments in our Facebook community and in emails I receive is the recurring theme of viewing ourselves negatively. We think and many times say things about ourselves that are very damaging to our self esteem. This has to stop now because you are being your own worst enemy and hurting not only your fitness journey but every other goal you may have in your life.
Think about it. How many times have you thought or said out loud the following statements:
- I am fat.
- I am ugly.
- I can’t do ____________ (fill in the blank).
- I am broke.
- I am lazy.
- I am clumsy.
- I am disorganized.
How many more things can you add to this list? The worst part? You are with yourself the most and these negative thoughts probably occur over and over throughout your day. This has to stop NOW. Take a moment and write down 3 negative thoughts you continually have. Now look at that list – REALLY LOOK AT IT. Is there anything on that list that you would say to a child? To a friend? To your spouse? Of course not! You would never say anything so harmful to another person especially a child that you want to grow up to respect not only others but themselves. So why would you think it’s okay to say these things to yourself?
Take those 3 things that you wrote down and rewrite them as a positive. Here are some examples:
- My body supports my activities easily as I make my way through my day.
- I can do anything I set my mind to do.
- I have more than enough to pay my bills this month.
- My desk is getting more organized every day.
- I get everything done on my daily to-do list.
Do you see how much better you feel just by rewriting the negatives as a positive? I’m not telling you to say anything that is not true. What I am asking you to do is to be realistic in your assessment of what actually is because 9 times out of 10 it’s not as bad as your thoughts are leading you to believe. If you are one that continually thinks negatively, this is going to be a challenge for you but if there is just one goal you need to reach – it is this one. Just being a little more positive makes even the toughest day a little bit easier to deal with.
Negative thoughts are like a virus that gets in your body but you have the vaccine to get rid of them. In this case, the vaccine is countering each negative thought with a positive thought. Now that you have countered your negative thoughts with positive thoughts, you need to be aware during the day when a negative thought comes to mind and quickly replace that negative thought with a positive thought. This won’t happen overnight but it will get easier every day that you focus on the positive versus the negative.
Remember, you have no tolerance for any negative thoughts that come to mind. None. Do not allow those thoughts to take root. Then one day those negative thoughts you used to have will have disappeared from your mind. You GOT this!
